Budget Start Date and Budget Period

The first time you logon to Who Stole My Money, the site will ask you to configure the system, i.e. the Budget Period Settings. Screen shot below:

This is because, Budget Period Settings is an important part of this application. It is not only the cycle we use to track our expenditures and incomes, but also the fundamental for most of the reports.  Therefore, making sure you have a sensible Budget Start Date and Budget Period that reflects your situation is a good way of getting the most out of Who Stole My Money.  We recommend you setting this up in correlation to your pay. For example:

-   If your first pay date is 10 Jan 07 and you get paid monthly, then set up the Budget Start Date as 10 Jan 07 and Budget Period to be 1 Month.

However, if you also get paid bonus every three months, you might like to set up your Budget Period to be 3 Months.

After you enter the data, click on the "Update" button, the information you entered will be stored by the system for calculating your budgets and reports.

If you have any problem with the site, please send us an email to support@whostolemymoney.com

File Upload

What is .csv file

A .CSV file, is a file (just like an excel or word document), that contains your transactions (income and expenses).  You can download this file from your internet banking and upload this into Who Stole My Money to have all your transactions automatically entered into the system for you. For instructions on how to download this file refer to Downloading Transactions from your bank.

Upload transactions (.csv) file

Transactions are uploaded onto the Who Stole My Money site from your computer, so you need to download the transactions first from your bank.

After you login, you will see the "Upload Transactions" link  available at the top of every page, just under the logo.  Click on the link, you will be taken to the Upload Transactions page. Use the "Browse..." button to select the file you wish to upload and click on the Upload button.

Depending on the size of your file, it may take a while for the file to be uploaded. Do not click on anything while the file is being uploaded.

Once the file is uploaded, all the transactions in the file will be displayed on the screen. You can from here assign your transactions to appropriate categories. When you are done, click on "Proceed" at the bottom of the page.

NOTE: All transaction files must be in .csv format downloaded directly from your bank's online site.  The file cannot be edited in any way or saved after opening as this will change the file format resulting in the .csv file not been accepted by the site.

When you upload a transaction file, the system will try automatically categories the unassigned transactions you have, based on:

-   The categories that you have used for previous transactions.

-   The categories that other users in the our system have used for their transactions

Remember, the more you manually assign your transactions, the more the site will learn therefore, and the easier it will be for you to use the system the next time.

If you have any problem with the site, please send us an email to support@whostolemymoney.com

Categories

What are categories?

Categories are codes or envelopes that are created for the user to assign their transactions to, so the user can both see which area they have spent their money in and track how much money they have spent in each area for the current budget period.  Categories are divided into Expense Category and Income Category.  A few default categories are available to all users. Default categories cannot be edited or deleted by user.

Add new categories

You may have transactions that you feel not belonging to any of the default categories available.  If this is the case, you can add a new category to suit your needs.

At the bottom of the Category page, click on  or  button, that

will take you to the Add Expense Category or Add Income Category page.

Specify a category Name, and use the Description column to remind yourself what kinds of transactions you would like the newly created category to include. For example, if you create a category Name "Children", you might decide to put Description like "Toys, lunches, schools, activities, clothing etc."

However, it is impossible to set up categories that would fit all your expenses and income perfectly.  Categories are used for all budget period, so if you set up a "perfect" category for each transaction that occur only once in a while, you will be cluttering up your categories and reports in no time.

An alternative is to set up a category named "Other" to cover transactions that occur only occasionally.  You can also set up a limit for this "Other" category to cover the unexpected expenses or income.

Category Limit and One-Off Limit

For more experienced users, you can set limits to each of your category and Total Income and Total Expense categories.  Limits are used to track the spending for each budget period.  Who Stole My Money will warn you (on the Overview page) when your current spending is approaching or exceeded a limit you set.

To set Limit or One-Off Limit for a category, click on the Edit link next to the category on the Category page.

One-Off Limit is only valid for the current budget period. The system will use the reoccurring limit you set once this budget period is over.

Remember to check the Enable box on the Edit Category page when you want to use the limit feature.

If you have any problem with the site, please send us an email to support@whostolemymoney.com

Displaying expenses and incomes

The system by default will show all your transactions in the system, displaying the most recent transactions first.  At the bottom of the Expense or Income page, you will see how many transactions there are in total and what page you are on.

You can filter the expenses and incomes shown by using the filters at the top of the Expense and Income page.  You can choose to display only the transactions that's meet your filtering criteria on dates, category and/or the amount.

You can also sort your transactions in ascending or descending order by any of the columns available, that is Date, Description, Amount, Category and Source. Sorting is simply done by clicking on the column name or the up-down errors like this one.

Suggest Categories

At the bottom of Expense and Income page, there is a button "Suggest Categories".  When you click this button, the system will try automatically categories the unassigned transactions you have, based on:

-         The categories that you have used for previous transactions.

-         The categories that other users in the our system have used for their transactions

So, what you can do is just assign one of your repeating transactions, and click the "Suggest Categories" button and let our system to do the rest.  To save time, we recommend you to assign all the unique transactions (by description) manually then click on "Suggest Categories" button.

Because the system is doing lots of comparisons to assign the category, this process may take a while to complete.  Please do not click on anything else on the site prior to its completion.

Once the system is finished with suggesting the categories, it will take you to another page showing all the transactions that the system is able to assign and the transactions the system could make suggestions of.  You can at this stage confirm transaction categories or make changes if it doesn't suit you.  Remember, the more you manually assign your transactions, the more the site will learn therefore, the easier it will be for you to use the system in the future.
